Sansevieria zeylanica, also known as Mother-in-Law’s Tongue or Snake Plant, is a uniquely shaped plant native to the drier areas of Sri Lanka. It has an upright growth pattern with long, narrow, and thick sword shaped leaves that form a point and are twisty and wavy around the edges. It has a shallow root system and is best allowed to be a little bit rootbound. In lower light conditions, this plant will also need less water. In brighter lighting, it can use more water, but in general it is better to keep this plant on the drier side. It is therefore a commonly seen office, airport, or houseplant due to its ease of care. Too much water will cause the plant to rot. Mother-in-Law’s Tongue generally grows to be about 2-3 feet tall but can reach as high as 5 feet under excellent lighting. Sansevieria zeylanica is a species that features dark green leaves with a lighter green to white striping pattern throughout.
