At North Hanley during the spring season we have a total of 12 regular greenhouses + 5 portables which are taken down every year. There are an additional 3 permanent greenhouses at Maryland Heights. The space is utilized more than one time during the season. There is a constant rotation of plantings working their way through these busy houses. When the portable greenhouses come down they space is immediately covered in black plastic and used to display hundreds of mums usually around late august. When Spetember rolls around the space is again cleared, but this time in prep for pumpkinland! Pumpkinland plays area takes us through October when the last bale of straw is being hauled away and Christmas trees are already pushing their way on in
Not only do we grow our own greenhouse stock but also sow the seeds for all of our field tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, squash, zuchinni, and much more. We plant and harvest on a constant basis so that our markets are full of produce from early summer through December.
HONEY, JAMS, JELLIES & MORE
There is often a lull of business between flower season and when produce really kicks in, though there is actually so much to be found at the farm then too! The first thing that comes to peoples minds when they hear Thies Farm is the taste of homegrown. We don’t blame you! Is there anyting in the world better than taking a huge bite of a juicy, vine-ripened tomato or an ear of corn just plucked off the cobb!? But we have other great products too like preserves, salad dressings, salsas and more. Did you know for instance that we carry over 30 “berry” based items? Everything from the basics, like good ole’ strawberry preserves (and ours are yummy) to something a little bit out of the ordinary, like say Bumbleberry Jam, yes Bumbleberry.
We also carry Larry Hensley’s fine Missouri honey in a wide variety of sizes. Larry is our beekeeper who maintains all of the hives at both farms. You may have also noticed Larry’s observation hives that are for display in the markets during summer and fall. You cant get much more local than that! As you may already know local honey is great for allergy sufferers.
Since we’ve already got you thinking outside the grocery store box why not try something different on your sandwich too!? Maybe some Coopers Mill Hot Pepper Butter for a change? Or possibly some fig preserves? Like a Newton but without the cookie? Apple Butter is by far the most popular item in this category but for a million dollars you wont guess what the runner up is… McCutcheons Pickled Beet Balls. Try them sometime!
~Most of these items are available mid-may thru December~
