Thies Farm dates back to 1885 when a 25-acre parcel of land was purchased at what is now North Hanley Road
and Highway 70. Ten of those original 25 acres are still home base for the existing farming and greenhouse
business. Greenhouses, a retail market, and the main office occupy the North Hanley farm located at 4215 North
Hanley Road in Saint Louis, Missouri.
This family farm operation began as a truck farm, raising fruits and vegetables and trucking them daily to the
produce market in downtown St. Louis. Today the fifth generation Thies’s carry on this tradition with a second
location at 3120 Creve Coeur Mill Road in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
The farm in Maryland Heights, Missouri consists of approximately 120 acres of fruit and vegetable production
plus the greenhouse operation, which covers almost 40,000 square feet. A retail market at each farm brings the
fresh harvested produce and bedding plants directly from the fields to the consumer.
The desire for delicious, fresh, homegrown taste hasn’t changed over the years, but technology and
environmental concerns have. To stay competitive many new technologies and special equipment are used
today in producing a product that more efficiently utilizes our natural resources. Using new technologies
while still producing quality is what Thies Farm and Greenhouses Inc. strive for. In farming one doesn’t
work with the clock but often against it. As the original Thies’s did over 120 years ago the current Thies’s
still put in a 60-70 hour workweek.
That is more than pride. It is our family history!
